Setting of the Goals, 2023 Edition.

Writer's picture: Josh BlackmonJosh Blackmon

It’s that time of year again, the end of one year and the beginning of yet another, which means it is time for my annual goal recap and setting of the new.

As always, here are some song lyrics that spoke to this year, I actually had a hard time deciding between two songs, but this one is just more fun and upbeat, and thats the energy I’m trying to manifest. This year, we have Smoothie, courtesy of Corook.

I don't even know what happened to me You could go ask anyone who knew me I was really shy and kinda droopy I got blended up and now I'm smoothie, woo-wee Haven't felt this good since I was eighteen Tryna figure out why, but it beats me Everybody's nebby so they gotta ask me something like "What's new?" Everybody's asking Like it's something that I drank or I found it in a basket Well, I would call it passion Now I'm killing it like Carole Baskin What's new? Well, not much I got new jeans and I just stopped giving a fuck And, damn, I'm feeling so good (Yeah, yeah) I don't even know what happened to me You could go ask anyone who knew me I was really shy and kinda droopy I got blended up and now I'm smoothie, woo-wee It's a good a thing I never let depression keep me down too long 'Cause now I love me Ain't life funny? Yeah

So how’d we do in 2022?

• Finish the final book in the Roller Derby Vampire Girl Trilogy: In the Hands of My Creator.

So, I have not finished it yet. But that’s ok. I’m about a third of the way through. I also pushed the release date to 2024 to give myself some time to wrap up the series correctly and not rush it.

• Finish the pilot script for Roller Derby Vampire Girl.

Yes! I not only finished a pilot script, but I also finished a full-length feature script for the first book. PG-13 and R-Rated versions exist.

• Establish new healthy habits.

Eh. I mean, some. I guess. Most of them feel like the stuff I should be doing because I am getting older.

• Travel somewhere (Pandemic dependent).

Nowhere super fancy. We took a couple of beach trips and went to Disney. My New Orleans event fell through, but that’s ok. It happens.

• Sell the film/TV rights for Roller Derby Vampire Girl.

Not yet, but I legitimately have a little momentum and interest. In complete honesty, right now, though, unless someone outright buys the rights, I am not in a financial situation to pitch it like it needs to be. I had a firm/agency inquire about representing me/the project, but I can’t really afford that kind of commitment.

• Be the positive person for those around me.

I hope so!

• Start a new family tradition.

Only time will tell what gets repeated! Haha

• Never be limited by lists.

Ok, so hit or miss, but accomplishments no matter what! So here are my goals for 2023!

• Write something “new.”

Imposter syndrome has me severely worried I might be a one “hit” wonder, so to speak. Do I have any creativity beyond the Roller Derby Vampire Girl trilogy or an audience? I hope so.

I went ahead and went bold and announced a novel or novella loosely based on my old Lycanthropy stuff due out in October titled, Lick Your Wounds.

• Finish the final book in the Roller Derby Vampire Girl Trilogy: In the Hands of My Creator.

I want to have the book finished in 2023 so I can basically have a year to edit and do pre-publish marketing correctly.

• Sell the film/TV rights for Roller Derby Vampire Girl.

On here until it happens. Publishing the book was on my list for ten years before it happened, so I'm in no real rush.

• Make something.

I don’t know exactly what this looks like. Pottery was a blast this year, but I’m open to whatever random thing crosses my path. Or maybe I’ll finally make an old-school monster mask that I’ve talked about doing for 20 years.

• Spend more time outdoors.

I want to do some gardening and such, and maybe even finally get some bees for the house. But even just make time to work outside or go for a walk. I think some additional outdoor time would do me good.

• Try a new food.

I’m not really a picky eater, and I have tried many new foods over the years, but I’m sure there is a lot I haven’t. And I want to always encourage my kids to be adventurous eaters. What better way than literally putting my money where my mouth is. (I don't plan on eating money, just for clarification.)

• Never be limited by lists.

Here is to a fantastic 2023 for everyone!
